Provide fare concessions for more groups

I WELCOME the announcement by Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew that the fare review committee will hold back on presenting its recommendations to the Government till the end of May ("Fare review committee to look into affordability"; Feb 16).

Commuters have, on several occasions, been affected by train breakdowns and congestion during peak hours, as well as long waiting times for buses.

Public transport operators are making substantial profits. I hope their top management will make public the remuneration packages of their key personnel such as the chief executive and directors.

I also hope the fare review committee will propose concessions for a few groups of commuters, such as the elderly, tertiary students from polytechnics and private institutions, and people with chronic illnesses who need to go for regular medical appointments.
