Malaysian opposition alliance launches election manifesto

SHAH ALAM (Selangor) - Malaysian opposition alliance Pakatan Rakyat (PR) launched its election manifesto on Monday, wooing the working and middle-class with promises of more jobs, higher minimum wage and lower electricity, water and oil prices.

Titled "The People's Manifesto: The People's Pact, the People's Hope", PR said it would help households achieve a minimum monthly income of RM4,000 (S$1,570) with its policies, as well as adjust the income band for its maximum 26 per cent tax rate from RM250,000 to above RM400,000.

It will also create one million new jobs for locals, while phasing out one million foreign labourers in the country.

At its launch at the Shah Alam Convention Centre, the coalition repeated earlier promises to lower car prices and offer free tertiary education.
