Kampung@Simpang Bedok set to be the future of hawker centres?


The common habit to have a quick meal in an overcrowded and stuffy hawker centre is changing.

At the new Kampung@Simpang Bedok, the airy food centre - complete with beer and wine stalls, as well as an upcoming bakery and coffee section - encourages diners to relax over a meal and kick back with some drinks at night.

Opened in October last year, the food centre is run by social enterprise Best Of Asia, which helps budding hawkers get their business ideas off the ground.

Some stallholders pay full rental and keep their profits, while others opt for a joint venture with the social enterprise, and are paid a salary until they are able to own the stall by themselves.
