Proposal sends right signal to Singaporeans
I WAS heartened by MP Hri Kumar Nair's proposal ("Levy national defence tax on PRs, foreigners: MP"; last Thursday).
It is timely to levy a national defence tax on permanent residents (PRs) and foreigners, and even on companies that stubbornly prefer to hire foreigners because they do not have to go for reservist training.
There are strong perceptions that citizens have been treated unfairly, and Mr Nair's proposal, if taken up, will send a strong signal that the Government truly looks after the interests of Singaporeans.
Singaporeans have done their duty, now it is the turn of PRs and foreigners to pay a duty if they are keen to stay on in Singapore.
