Operate new express bus service throughout the day

THE new express bus service

850E between Yishun and the Central Business District is indeed useful in providing a more comfortable and direct travel alternative for commuters ("New express bus service for Yishun"; last Wednesday).

However, I urge the authorities to consider operating the service throughout the day, instead of only at the morning and evening peak hours.

There is strong passenger demand at all times, on both weekdays and weekends, for Express 502 and 518, which respectively link Jurong West and Jurong East, and Tampines and Pasir Ris, to the city.

This shows that passengers are willing to pay a premium fare for a more direct and comfortable bus service.

By increasing the number of express bus services operating all day, more travel options will open up for commuters residing in non-mature estates.

The authorities should also consider introducing more long-distance express services that serve far-flung HDB estates and industrial areas.

These services should have limited stops and use expressways.

Private bus companies could be invited to operate these express routes, thus providing an opportunity to introduce some competition in public transport.
