Award-winning potter Iskandar Jalil lets students shine in new show

Master potter Iskandar Jalil says his new group show at the Japan Creative Centre does not mean he is coming out of retirement.

To prove it, his 30-odd ceramic pieces are tucked into the back of the display on Nassim Road. Taking centrestage are works from more than 15 students past and present, such as potters Suriani Suratman and Tan Gek Lin.

"It's time for me to say goodbye, I've been doing this for 60 years," says the 73-year-old artist who gave his last solo show in 2011.

He was invited to use the Japan Creative Centre space last year and he agreed as a thank you to the country where he studied ceramics in 1972 under a Colombo Plan scholarship.
