PUNGGOL EAST BY-ELECTION

Govt has to speed up on bread-and-butter solutions

KUDOS to Ms Lee Li Lian for winning the by-election in Punggol East with a credible margin ("WP sweeps Punggol East with 54.5%"; yesterday).

The voters in Punggol East, the majority of whom belong to the "sandwiched class", have reason to vote for the opposition.

Many national issues have not been addressed expeditiously and remain major concerns, although they have been discussed and debated many times publicly and in Parliament.

Issues like the high cost of certificates of entitlement for cars, and housing, and unhappiness over the immigration policies, have inevitably swayed the votes to the opposition.

The People's Action Party should now take serious note of this latest defeat and act decisively and expeditiously on those policies that have created high inflation and made the lives of the sandwiched class and the low-income earners more difficult.
