Praise for Halimah's appointment as new Speaker
CONGRATULATIONS to Madam Halimah Yacob, who will create history by becoming Singapore's first woman Speaker of Parliament ("Duty calls for Halimah as new Speaker"; Wednesday).
However, it is sad to know that she has to drop her Minister of State portfolio. She began as a backbencher MP in 2001, before crossing to the frontbench. She is known for voicing her opinions and suggestions, both in and out of Parliament.
Her promotion to the Speaker role clearly shows that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong recognises the contributions, efforts and commitment of our MPs, regardless of their race, religion, age, gender and background.
I hope that Madam Halimah will provide fair and ample time for all MPs to debate issues in Parliament.
