Use plastic bags responsibly

I AGREE with Mr Carl Nunes ("Free plastic bags serve a need"; yesterday).

Not giving out free plastic bags may breed more environmental harm than good, at least for some time to come, as they are used to throw away rubbish by most people.

However, this does not mean that the public and the shops cannot do their part in reducing the use of plastic bags.

People could give surplus bags to vegetable and fruit sellers.

Supermarkets and department stores should not give out more plastic bags than necessary.

If everyone plays his part, the use of plastic bags should be reduced significantly in no time at all.
