Principals should go beyond school's success: Heng Swee Keat

A principal has to understand that his school is part of a larger school system, and have the "generosity of spirit" to not just narrowly focus on his school's success, Education Minister Heng Swee Keat said on Thursday.

"Our principals' key challenge is more than competing for the most talented students, or showing that our school is better than the next school," he said.

As leaders in education, principals are expected to share and collaborate with others "to bring our entire education system forward", he said.

Mr Heng was speaking at the appointment and appreciation ceremony for principals at the Shangri-la hotel. Sixty principals received their letters of appointment, including Mrs Teo Khin Hiang, 54, who took over last week from former River Valley High School principal Steven Koh Yong Chiah, 58, who is assisting the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau in its probe.
