People cheated in lucky draw phone scams lost $4.6m


MORE people were cheated in phone scams involving lucky draws in the first eight months of this year compared to the same period last year.

This year's victims also lost more money - $4.6 million in the eight months compared to last year's corresponding $3.8 million.

The number of successful phone scams involving fake kidnappings, however, fell this year compared to last year.

Twenty people were cheated of $115,000 between January and August, compared with 32 people who lost $189,000 in the same period last year.
