Britain's former PM Thatcher undergoes bladder surgery

LONDON (AFP) - Britain's former prime minister Margaret Thatcher was recovering in hospital on Friday following an operation to remove a growth in her bladder, her spokesman said.

The 87-year-old, Britain's only female premier, is doing "absolutely fine," having undergone a minor operation, the spokesman said.

Dubbed the "Iron Lady", the former Conservative Party leader, Britain's prime minister from 1979 to 1990, was admitted to hospital on Thursday and was expected to stay overnight Friday.

In recent years, Mrs Thatcher - the 20th century's longest continuous occupant of 10 Downing Street - has been a subdued figure.
