Uefa bars Malaga from European Cups for a season

NYON, Switzerland (AP) - Uefa has banned Champions League contenders Malaga from European club competitions for one upcoming season for failing to pay players wages and tax bills on time.

Uefa says the Qatari-owned Spanish club could be banned for a second season within the next four years if it misses a March 31 deadline to pay its debts.

Uefa announced the sanctions Friday, one day after Malaga was drawn to play FC Porto in the Champions League last-16 round. It will be banned from the next European tournament it qualifies for.

Uefa says it also fined Malaga 300,000 euros (S$484,000).
