Improving traffic flow in northern Singapore

WE THANK Mr Wong Sang Hum for his suggestions ("Traffic woes in the north"; Dec 10).

We started on projects since last year to improve the overall connectivity of the road network in the Sengkang/Seletar/Yishun area.

These include the construction of the new dual-three-lane Sengkang West Road and the new Seletar Aerospace Interchange. When completed in 2014, the new road will provide motorists currently using Jalan Kayu to get to Seletar Aerospace Way with a direct route into the Seletar Aerospace Park. These new connections will also provide motorists living in Yishun with a direct link to the Tampines Expressway.

Mr Wong also highlighted the junction at Seletar West Link and Seletar Club Road. The current layout at this junction is a temporary arrangement to facilitate the ongoing construction works. As the junction is relatively small and has a tight turning radius that is regularly used by heavy vehicles, it will not be feasible to introduce a left turning arrow.

Instead, to alleviate the situation currently experienced at this junction during peak hours, a new road will be constructed to link up Seletar West Link and Yishun Avenue 1.

This will provide a direct alternative route for traffic heading towards Yishun Avenue 1, and will help to alleviate the queues currently experienced at the junction of Seletar West Link and Seletar Club Road.

Works are already ongoing and we expect to complete the works for the signalisation in about three months.

In the interim, we will monitor the traffic situation at this junction closely and adjust the green time where necessary.
