Japan's new PM to appoint LDP veteran Aso as finance minister: Asahi Shimbun

TOKYO (REUTERS) - Japan's new Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has decided to appoint Taro Aso, a veteran lawmaker from the Liberal Democratic Party, as finance minister, the Asahi newspaper reported.

Mr Aso, a former prime minister, would also serve as deputy prime minister, the Asahi reported without citing any sources.

He is seen as likely to toe the party line, which calls for a weaker yen, more spending on public works and more aggressive monetary easing by the Bank of Japan.

Tapping Mr Aso as finance minister suggests that Mr Abe is looking to LDP veterans to fill important positions to avoid any criticism that his cabinet lacks experience.
