Other ways to pay for bus driver wage hike

WHILE I support the suggestion to hire more citizens in all sectors, especially for essential services, it should not be done at the expense of bus commuters ("Higher bus costs to be shared: Lui"; last Friday).

There are other ways besides raising fares to increase revenue to offset the additional cost of improving service and giving bus drivers higher salaries. These include:

- Increasing advertising space in buses, trains, bus interchanges and train stations to generate more advertising revenue;

- Increasing shop space at the transport nodes to generate more rental revenue; and

- The Government setting aside a sum of money from the Budget to reward public transport operators that exceed the service performance indicators.
