LTA, SMRT to fit 2 trains with abnormality detection sensors next January

From next January, rail operator SMRT will outfit two trains plying the North-South and East-West lines with sensors that can detect abnormalities on the third rail.

Among other measures, it will also use trackside cameras to monitor the condition of the third rail which supplies power to trains.

In a joint release on Friday evening, the Land Transport Authority and SMRT gave an update of measures that have been taken following recommendations made by a Committee of Inquiry (COI) in July.

That inquiry came after two major breakdowns on the North-South Line last December that affected more than 200,000 commuters.
