Fare increase not just to raise salaries of bus drivers: Lui Tuck Yew

Public transport fare increases are not for the purpose of boosting the short term profits of operators, nor is it done to just for the purpose of improving the salaries of bus drivers.

Any increase in fares is to improve service levels for commuters while keeping operations commercially viable.

Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew made this comments on his Facebook page on Thursday afternoon as a follow up to his comments last week on how fares may be raised to help raise the salaries of bus drivers.

Improved service levels for commuters, he said, would require more bus drivers and high salaries. These additional costs will come on top of other cost increases to operators including rising energy costs.
