It's only fair to let SMRT chief pick his lieutenants
WHILE I understand Dr Lim Boon Hee's concerns that people with a military background may not be fully exposed to the rigours of the marketplace ("Military professionals in SMRT not a good idea"; yesterday), we should not rule them out completely.
There are a number of organisations, such as Singapore Technologies, that have tapped the invaluable knowledge of such military men, who have done well in their respective fields.
Moreover, SMRT chief executive Desmond Kuek should be given a free hand to pick his people to resolve the serious issues faced by his company, such as the recent major train breakdowns and the illegal strike.
Ultimately, Mr Kuek is responsible for the results delivered, and to deprive him of the freedom to choose his staff is unfair.
