Table tennis: 'Doubles-double' for S'pore at World Tour Grand Finals
Singapore's table tennis squad completed a twin success at the US$1 million (S$1.22 million) ITTF World Tour Grand Finals in Hangzhou on Sunday, when Feng Tianwei and Yu Mengyu combined to win the women's doubles title.
The duo, who only entered the tournament because of a late withdrawal by a Romanian pair, came from behind to beat Taiwan's Cheng I-ching and Huang Yi-hua 4-3 (11-13, 11-13, 11-8, 11-4, 11-3, 5-11, 11-2) in the final. Earlier in the semis, the Singaporeans defeated Hong Kong's Jiang Huajun and Lee Ho Ching 4-1 (11-9, 12-10, 11-8, 10-12, 11-8).
The victory at the season-ending tournament came after the Republic's Gao Ning and Li Hu won the men's doubles title on Saturday. Each winning pair picked up US$50,000 in prize money.
In Sunday's other result, China's top seed Xu Xin defeated compatriot Wang Hao 4-0 (11-8, 11-7, 11-6, 11-7) to win the men's singles title.
