An unwelcome wake-up call at 4am
MY WEEKEND respite was interrupted at 4am on Sunday, after loud noises jolted me from sleep. My first thought was that it was a civil defence emergency - what else could justify such pandemonium?
To my exasperation, the cause was a relentless onslaught of pounding music and yelling announcers, amplified unbearably by mega speakers, at the opening of the Standard Chartered Marathon.
Residents like me treasure our weekend rest. Even events such as the Hungry Ghost Festival celebrations and weddings or wakes have to be mindful of the noise they generate in residential estates, and are not permitted to make a din beyond stipulated hours.
Why did the race organiser, the Singapore Sports Council, allow such a racket to be created at an early hour in close proximity to a residential neighbourhood?
