Caverns open up new opportunities for land-scarce Singapore

Building storage facilties underground will free up land for other purposes, said Minister for National Development Khaw Boon Wan.

In a blog post on Tuesday, Mr Khaw said he had visited the Jurong Rock Caverns (JRC) beneath the Banyan Basin on Jurong Island with Prime Minister's Office and Second Minister for Trade and Industry S. Iswaran recently and found it "quite an experience".

Located at a depth of more than 130m, phase one of the JRC contains five caverns which will provide storage and terminalling facilities for liquid hydrocarbons such as crude oil and condensate.

Mr Khaw said these will form an important infrastructure for Singapore's petrochemical industry.
