Set up taxi booking hubs

EUROPEAN countries like Finland, where taxi call booking is free and cabs do not hunt for commuters, offer one solution for a more effective service ("Ways to improve taxi utilisation" by Mr Ramesh Ramchand; last Thursday).

Taxis wait at hubs for customers to call. Hub clusters can be set up in different zones covering specific distances which will allow a cab to reach a destination or answer a booking within five minutes, for instance.

Such a system reduces road congestion, petrol consumption, accidents and driver fatigue, which in turn cut operational costs for cabbies and operators.

The taxi rental fee should be reduced and the income of drivers increased so that taxi fares do not go up every year.
