China defends Myanmar copper mine project
BEIJING - China has defended a copper mine project in Myanmar following protests at the site and called for society to respect the law.
The Monya Copper Mine Project, a joint venture between Myanmar and Chinese businesses, "will bring benefits to both sides," China's Embassy in Yangon said in a statement posted on its website today, Bloomberg reported.
Issues regarding relocation, compensation, environmental protection and profit-sharing were settled through negotiations, it said.
"We hope all levels of Myanmar society can create a favorable environment for the project's smooth operation based on respect for laws and regulations of Myanmar," the statement said.
