The better way to motivate students

I SUPPORT the Education Ministry's move not to name the top scorers in national exams ("MOE stops naming top students"; last Wednesday).

I do not see how naming the top scorers helps to motivate other students, as some parents have suggested.

This is akin to how companies keep their employees' salaries strictly confidential.

Letting employees know the salaries of their peers will bring more harm than benefits to the company.

Reports of students who have achieved academic success despite the odds can better motivate students.
