Narrow escape at gym: Safra replies
WE APOLOGISE to Mr Francis Cheng ("Narrow escape at Safra gym with old machines"; last Tuesday) for the unfortunate incident on Nov 15 and will conduct a thorough investigation.
Safra's gym equipment is checked regularly to ensure that it is well maintained and safe for use. This is done at two levels: weekly checks by our gym staff, and quarterly checks and maintenance by authorised equipment contractors.
In fact, the cable for the equipment in question was checked by the gym's appointed contractor on Oct 31, and replaced on Nov 14, having been certified fit for use.
We renew our gym equipment regularly. The equipment cited by Mr Cheng is eight years old and within its effective useful lifespan of 10 to 15 years, as advised by the equipment manufacturer.
Finally, our gym subscription fees have not been revised since January 1994.
