PR applicants evaluated holistically
WE THANK Mr Cheang Peng Wah for his letter ("Puzzled why poorly paid workers get to become PRs"; Forum Online, last Saturday).
The Government evaluates each permanent residence (PR) application holistically on a set of criteria that includes the applicant's family ties to Singaporeans, economic contributions, qualifications, age, family profile, length of stay in Singapore and commitment to sinking roots here.
This is to ensure that the immigrants we take in are able to contribute and integrate well into our society.
Some are granted PR as spouses and children of Singaporeans or other PRs, rather than based on their economic contributions alone. Such individuals may well take on part-time work or jobs with lower salaries.

MOE will publicise calendar changes
WE THANK Mr Dave Chen for his letter ("Publicise change to school holiday dates"; Wednesday).
The school calendar for next year will begin on Wednesday, Jan 2, and end on Friday, Nov 15.
This takes into account 40 weeks of curriculum time for the school year, to ensure adequate curriculum days for teaching and learning before the start of the national examinations, and maintain six weeks of school vacation at the end of the year for teachers and students.
We agree with Mr Chen that the Education Ministry should have issued a statement to publicise adjustments to the school calendar for next year, and we will do so in future years.
