System works for Singapore

I SYMPATHISE with pupils for having to sit the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) but I am constantly reminded of two things:

First, Singapore has no other natural resource other than its own people.

Second, Singapore is an uncanny economic success consistently punching above its weight.

So, whatever the criticisms, the education system works.

It effectively sifts out the best and the brightest and develops them into world-class leaders.

Those who sat the PSLE and had to endure rigorous hours of stress and tuition deserve sympathy. But, that is the price of living here. The best and the brightest must lead those who cannot cope and are less good and less bright.

That is the expectation and norm of any society and social structure.
