What about cars illegally modified in Malaysia?
IF ONE of the main sources of illegal vehicle modifications are workshops across the Causeway, dealing with errant workshops in Singapore will only solve half the problem ("Emissions-based tax, rebate for cars"; last Saturday).
Checks at the Causeway should be carried out not only for illegal goods, cigarettes, weapons, drugs and immigrants, but also for illegal vehicle modifications done in other countries.
The problem can be nipped if vehicles, souped up illegally outside Singapore, are stopped at the checkpoints. The effectiveness of the three-quarter petrol gauge rule is an example of how such checks can be carried out.
