Opposition LDP leads poll month before Japan votes

TOKYO (AP) - The main opposition Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is ahead in polls a month before Japan's parliamentary election, but many voters remain undecided, according to the Yomiuri newspaper.

The LDP had support from 26 per cent of voters polled, while 13 per cent said they backed the ruling Democratic Party of Japan, the Yomiuri poll published on Sunday found.

Support for two new parties that plan to merge rivaled the DPJ in the survey, and 43 percent of respondents backed no particular party, it said.

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda dissolved parliament Friday and called elections for Dec. 16. The poll was conducted by telephone on Friday and Saturday and sampled 1,059 people.
