STB reviewing tourist guide rules

THE Singapore Tourism Board (STB) thanks Mr Edwin Lim for his feedback ("Stop illegal tour guides from leaving the country"; Forum Online, Nov 8).

With visitor arrivals reaching record highs and expected to continue rising, we have taken pre-emptive action to address any potential rise in illegal guiding activity.

Besides investigating tip-offs from licensed tourist guides and the wider industry, we have increased enforcement checks on unlicensed tourist guides.

We recognise that there are challenges and constraints in the present situation.

To address these issues holistically, the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the STB are reviewing the Tourist Guide Regulations and the Travel Agents Act and Regulations.

We will also continue to work with the tour guiding community and hold regular dialogues with our key partners, such as the Society of Tourist Guides (Singapore) and the NTUC Tour Guides Chapter, both of which serve as collective voices for the profession.
