'Decentralised CBDs' can ease congestion

WITH more developments slated over the next few years in the extended Central Business District (CBD), will our road, MRT and public bus systems be able to cope with the expected demand ("The remaking of the CBD"; last Saturday)?

The benefits of the Land Transport Authority's Travel Smart off-peak commuting scheme will be negated by the increased office developments in the "new CBD" over the next few years ("10,000 people to Travel Smart"; Oct 3).

There should be "decentralised CBDs" islandwide in order to even out our travel patterns and help relief congestion in the central area.

The Changi Business Park and International Business Park are good examples of decentralised CBDs. More of such business districts should be built in Bishan, Hougang, Punggol, Woodlands, Bukit Panjang, Choa Chu Kang, Jurong and Changi.

This is akin to having suburban shopping malls to spread out shopper traffic from Orchard Road.
