Singapore film-maker's "very LA story"
Singapore film-maker Yong Mun Chee moved from Singapore to Los Angeles in 1999. Her debut feature film, Where The Road Meets The Sun (2011), contains nods to almost every nationality except Singaporean. Ask whether she considers herself to still be a "Singaporean film-maker" and the answer gets a little complicated.
That question of national identity is one she has "thought about quite a bit", says Ms Yong, who directed, produced and wrote the screenplay for the film, an ensemble drama about fate, loss and redemption.
"I've been introduced to the world as a Singaporean director. That's how I'm introduced every time my film screens," says the former MediaCorp broadcast journalist by e-mail.
Ultimately, she prefers broader categories.
