12 prisoners dig tunnel, escape from Nepal jail

KATMANDU (AP) - Officials in Nepal say a dozen inmates including Indian and Bangladeshi nationals dug a tunnel and escaped from a prison in the Himalayan country's southeast.

Police officer Chatra Karki says the inmates escaped on Thursday night from the prison about 400km southeast of Katmandu. Police were searching the area for the escaped prisoners.

The inmates dug a 12m-long tunnel out of the prison walls using common tools that were available inside the prison.

They included inmates from Nepal, India and Bangladesh convicted of crimes ranging from theft to kidnapping and murder.
