Shirley MacLaine: The whole world's obsessed with Downton Abbey
In its first two seasons, British drama series Downton Abbey has distilled a popular blend of period drama, carefully controlled melodrama and unabashed soap opera, all lavishly packaged with an early 20th-century aristocratic England setting, and audiences have drunk it up with glee.
The show is broadcast in more than 100 countries worldwide and the final episode of the second season attracted 5.4 million viewers in the United States alone.
In Britain, Season 3 is already enjoying peak ratings of about nine million for each episode. Season 3 will premiere in Singapore on Diva Universal (StarHub Channel 522) in January. Seasons 1 and 2 are currently showing daily on the channel at 2pm.
With World War I over, the show can concentrate on what audiences want to see: life inside the house, both upstairs and down. Series Ccreator Julian Fellowes relishes the addition of extra layers inside the house.
