Flying machines in all shapes and sizes at Sentosa

Former Singapore Airlines stewardess Cordelia Low got a chance to pilot a "flying machine" on Sunday. She "flew" the craft from a 6m-high flight deck in Sentosa and landed smoothly on the water.

Her four-man team - which had designed and built the craft - came up tops in an event called Red Bull Flugtag. Flugtag means "flying day" in German.

Held for the first time in South-east Asia and organised by European energy-drink maker Red Bull, it had 38 teams battling it out with their inventions, and drew a crowd of 35,000 to Siloso Beach. The teams, shortlisted from 200 entries, were judged on creativity, showmanship and distance travelled by their craft.

Said Ms Low, 24, now a model and blogger: "I didn't even get wet - only my feet got wet because the craft just glided on the water."
