Businesses get a boost from thriving pedestrian malls


Many businesses and their clients are fans of the pedestrian mall concept. Following the recent proposal to turn part of Singapore’s premier shopping precinct, Orchard Road, into a pedestrian mall, SundayLife! looks at three streets – Albert St, Smith St and Lorong Mambong – that have already swapped cars for foot traffic.

Some businesses say they experience a 30 to 40 per cent increase in sales when the roads are closed, others say they like the vibrancy of the area when people take to the street with food or drinks in hand.

Pedestrians cite safety as a main advantage of closing a road to traffic and are unfazed by the slight inconvenience of having to park elsewhere and walk to the pedestrianised area.
