Three refugee rioters granted Australian visas

SYDNEY(AFP) - Three men who took part in violent riots at Australia's main immigration centre in which facilities were burned down have been given visas to remain in the country, a government spokesman said on Friday.

Seven men were convicted over the March 2011 riots which caused a reported AUD$5 million (S$6.3million) in damages to the Christmas Island detention centre and which police quelled using tear gas and "bean bag" bullets.

Only one has since had his visa claim refused on character grounds.

Two were found not to be genuine refugees and so ineligible for visas, one is appealing his conviction while three others were granted permission to stay, Immigration Minister Chris Bowen's spokesman said.
