Faulty power cable behind Circle Line disruption
A faulty power cable at Promenade station disrupted train service on the entire Circle Line on Thursday night, affecting 10,500 commuters.
At a media briefing on Friday morning, SMRT president and CEO Desmond Kuek noted that the issue was not a new one - a faulty power cable at Dakota station had triggered another major disruption on the Circle Line in September last year.
Said Lieutenant-General (NS) Kuek: “While we acknowledge that this problem has caused inconveniences during operations, it bears no impact on the safety of the system.”
The entire Circle Line stalled at 10.26pm last night. One train stalled between Bayfront and Promenade station last night, and 102 commuters had to be detrained.
Service between HarbourFront and Stadium had resumed at 12.15am, while the remaining sections of the line were closed for the rest of the night. The first Circle Line train pulled out of Kim Chuan Depot to Bartley station at 5.40am this morning, while service from Dhoby Ghaut started at 6.05am.
Lt-Gen (NS) Kuek apologized to commuters for the inconvenience caused and gave an assurance that SMRT is “taking all measures to ensure the reliability of the Circle Line”.
He said SMRT has been working closely with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) on the replacement of cables on the Circle Line.
This includes cable specifications to “ensure they are better suited for the operating environment, as some of the cables are submerged in water”, he added.
SMRT and LTA are now looking at accelerating the cable replacement programme. This includes the possibility of extending engineering hours or closing selected stretches during off-peak hours, he said.
