Ishihara's resignation wont impact Tokyo 2020 bid
TOKYO (AP) - The head of Tokyo's bid for the 2020 Olympics says the resignation of Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara will have little impact on efforts to secure the games.
Mr Ishihara, the driving force behind Tokyo's second consecutive Olympic bid, said on Thursday he is quitting after nearly 14 years in office to form a new political party.
"We are confident that the Tokyo Metropolitan Government will continue providing support for the bid and that Governor Ishihara's resignation will have no impact on our campaign," Tokyo 2020 bid president Tsunekazu Takeda said in a statement.
Tokyo is bidding against Istanbul and Madrid. The International Olympics Committee (IOC) will select the host city next year at its meeting in Buenos Aires on Sept 7.
