15 arrested for drink driving
FIFTEEN motorists were arrested early Thursday morning for drink driving.
The 12 men and three women, aged between 26 and 58, were among 72 drivers stopped and tested for alcohol consumption between 1:30 and 4:30 am. Police road blocks were set up at Sims Avenue, Lavender Street, Clemenceau Avenue and Outram Road.
If convicted, drink drivers will be disqualified from driving for at least a year. They will also lose their driving licences, said police in a statement. First-time offenders can be fined between $1,000 and $5,000, or jailed up to six months while repeat offenders may be fined a maxiumum of $30,000 and jailed up to three years. They may also be caned up to six strokes if they cause death or serious injury.
Commander of Traffic Police Cheang Keng Keong warned motorists not to put the community at risk by drink driving. Mr Cheang, who is also Assistant Commissioner of Police, noted that 12 people had already died from January to September this year due to the actions of drink drivers.
