Mother pleads for Australian lawyer held in Mongolia

SYDNEY (AFP) - An Australian lawyer barred from leaving Mongolia will meet local authorities on Saturday, Foreign Minister Bob Carr said, as her mother pleaded: "Get her out, just get her out."

Sarah Armstrong, the 32-year-old chief legal counsel to Rio Tinto subsidiary SouthGobi Resources, was blocked from boarding a flight last week from the capital Ulan Bator to Hong Kong, where she is based.

Officials want to question her as a witness to alleged corruption and money-laundering.

Mr Carr said Armstrong was scheduled to meet Mongolian authorities on Saturday, with the support of Australian diplomats.
