Jailed, fined for cheating son at father's funeral wake
THEY were grieving the death of a family member but that counted for nought for Tan Lay Chuan. He claimed to be an employee of the company providing food for the wake and cheated them of $6,300.
Tan, 34, pleaded guilty on Thursday to cheating and to stealing 22 cans of beer from a supermarket. He was sentenced to one week in jail and fined $5,000.
A district court heard that on the afternoon of April 10 this year, Tan went up to the chef preparing food at the wake at Block 627 Hougang Avenue 8 and asked for the invoice.
Assuming that Tan was related to the grieving family, the chef passed him the invoice from Beng Tin Hng Restaurant for $6,370.
