Indonesian businessman donates $1m to NKF

Indonesian-Chinese businessman Kasmadi Melati, 68, has donated $1 million to the National Kidney Foundation (NKF).

This is the largest donation received by the foundation from a living individual since 1999 when SUTL Group chairman Tay Choon Hye, donated $5 million to set up a dialysis centre here.

Mr Kasmadi, who has businesses interests in hospitality and manufacturing, has made charitable contributions back in his hometown of Dumai, but this is his first such donation in Singapore since he first came here 20 years ago. He is now working here.

Mr Kasmadi, who is working here, explained that a close friend had experienced kidney failure, and seeing his friend's experience with dialysis at a private clinic made him realise what an expensive treatment it was.
