Wabil, 10, out to show that 10km run is child's play

They say you always remember your first time.

If Wabil Arfan, 10, completes his first 10km race at the New Balance Real Run on Sunday, it will be unforgettable for another reason: He would be the youngest runner to finish the annual race's 17th edition.

It would also be a stepping stone to bigger things. Said the Fuchun Primary School pupil, who completed an 8km run last week at East Coast Park: "I want to run more than 10km. I want to run 21km. But I have to do it bit by bit." He wants running to improve his fitness and give him a better shot at making the school's football team.

But is he too young to be running such distances? Said his father Ahsanul Kalam, 43 and an IT project manager who will be running alongside Wabil at the Changi Exhibition Centre: "There is no pressure. If he wants to stop, we stop. We always keep properly hydrated, and we make sure we address every single pain, if he has any."
