Indian star Sridevi back on screen in style after 15 years

After having stayed away from the big screen for 15 years, Indian actress Sridevi shows she still has all it takes to be a real star in the new movie English Vinglish.

Essaying the role of Shashi Godbole, a housewife and a mother who is an excellent cook, the 49-year-old star of the 1970s and 1980s appears with minimal make-up, simple cotton saris and claims the screen as only a natural actor can.

The story is simple. Shashi is the butt of her family's jokes because she does not know English. Her children dismiss her just as easily as her annoying high-handed businessman husband (played by the award-winning actor Adil Hussain). Her niece's wedding takes her to New York, where she secretly enrols for English language classes.

In less competent hands, Shashi's transition, from a nervous housewife to a more confident woman through these classes, could have fallen flat. Sridevi - who has more than 200 films to her credit - pulls it off with ease.
