How many good food guides do we need?
Given the growing number of restaurants in a city that loves its food, can there ever be too many restaurant recommendations or too many food guides? Perhaps, especially with the emergence of more restaurant guides in recent times.
These days, aside from traditional print media such as newspapers and magazines, restaurant recommendations now come in the form of everything from printed and online forums, to websites, and even smartphone apps to help diners navigate the crowded food scene.
The newest food-centric guide to make inroads here is United States-based consumer-review and social networking portal Yelp (www.yelp.com.sg), which launched in Singapore last month. Next year, two more guides will enter the market.
They are: Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list, which is organised by William Reed Business Media, the publisher behind the coveted annual World’s 50 Best Restaurants list; and Google-owned consumer-review restaurant survey and guide, Zagat, which is currently conducting a survey of restaurants here.
