Australia names new House Speaker
CANBERRA - Australian ruling Labor party nominated Ms Anna Burke as new speaker of the House of Representatives on Tuesday to replace Mr Peter Slipper who was forced to resign over scandal.
Ms Burke was later elected as Speaker unopposed, Xinhua news agency reported.
Mr Slipper has been accused of sexually harassing his male staffer James Ashby and misusing taxi vouchers.
According to local media, lewd texts about female genitalia which he sent to Mr Ashby were revealed as a result of court proceedings and formed the basis of an opposition motion in parliament earlier on Tuesday for him to be dismissed as Speaker.
