Extended track closures remain a possibility: SMRT boss

Extended track closures for maintenance work remain a possibility, said SMRT's new chief executive Desmond Kuek.

The rail operator is still in discussions with the Land Transport Authority on whether this measure is needed, he told reporters during an early morning visit to Commonwealth station.

On his second day of work, Lieutenant-General (NS) Kuek on Wednesday observed workers replacing timber sleepers along the tracks between Commonwealth and Buona Vista stations.

The replacement of 180,000 timber sleepers on the North-South and East-West lines is one of SMRT's major renewal projects. Sleepers are structures that support and hold the rail tracks in place.
