Gongfu flick Taichi 0 given a steampunk twist

Helming his biggest movie to date, Taichi 0, Hong Kong actor-turned-director Stephen Fung appears to have tossed all of his pop culture influences - and the kitchen sink - into the mix.

The drama, the first instalment of a planned trilogy, is a traditional martial arts tale of a young man's journey to becoming a master pugilist but given a steampunk twist. Steampunk is a genre of fiction that incorporates science fiction, fantasy and futuristic innovations in a period setting.

In Taichi 0 - which stars Tony Leung Ka Fai, Eddie Peng, Angelababy and Asian Games champion pugilist Yuan Xiaochao - Fung throws in comic book drawings, video game influences, and even an homage to Western silent films.

Even its title uses the English-language slang "zero" to mean a loser.
